As a UX designer, I firmly believe in the power of technology to create solutions that enhance the lives of individuals, particularly those with unique needs and challenges. The concept of developing an app to assist disabled individuals in navigating the airport experience by reserving necessary services ahead of time, akin to the convenience provided by ride-sharing apps like Uber, is rooted in a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Airports, despite being gateways to countless destinations, can present formidable obstacles for individuals with disabilities. The journey from check-in to boarding often involves navigating through crowded terminals, long distances, and various checkpoints.

Moreover, the availability of essential services such as wheelchair assistance, specialized transportation, and priority security checks can be inconsistent or unpredictable.

And to put credit where credit's due, I designed this project after conversations with my grandma. She's been my #1 skybuddy since birth.

The Problem

In the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act, congress told TSA to fix air-travel accessibility problems and demanded more training, faster service, and taking better care of equipment, such as wheelchairs.” - NPR

Since then, there has been 54% increase of disability related disability-related complaints from 2019-2021.

Essentially, I want to

Take the fundamental principles of user-centered design and transform the airport experience for individuals with disabilities, making it more convenient, predictable, and accessible. My goal is to ensure that every person, regardless of their abilities, can embark on their journey with the freedom and dignity they deserve.

And now, we began the Research and Exploration Phase

To gain deeper insights into how we can address the problem, I devised a research approach encompassing a competitor analysis, user interviews and surveys, synthesis, and even my own field studies. Employing this comprehensive approach, we would assess user perceptions of the tool and collect valuable feedback for potential improvements.

Defining the scope of the project

I took some time to ideate on potential use cases, who I might be designing for, some accessibility concerns that come with my audience, and other apps / services to benchmark before starting anything else.

User interviews

By studying other apps that share similar objectives and interfaces, we gained valuable insights into best practices when designing for accessibility. Overall, it led to a more efficient process when addressing the specific needs of our target audience.
